SPSS Assignment #1 1.) Read pages 1-6 and 14-16 of the SPSS lab manual. Then perform analyses with this independent groups data (pg 6 of the SPSS manual) from a two-point threshold study. Hint: You will need to create a dummy variable in its own column that identifies a subject as being a finger or a neck subject. a.) Start in Variable View; put in labels for Threshold and Location b.) Identify the Location variable as a nominal variable in the Measure column c.) Identify Threshold as a scale variable in the Measure column d.) Identify the values for Location as 1.00 for Finger and 2.00 for Neck in the Values column (or vice-versa, if you like) e.) Click on the Data View tab f.) Select: View >> Value Labels (leave alone if already checked) g.) Record the data above in the Threshold column (all of it!) h.) Identify the Location as Finger or Neck for each data point in the Location column i.) Select Analyze: Compare Means>> Means j.) Put Threshold in the Dependent box and Location in the Independent box. k.) Click on Options to choose your outputs I.) Make sure you have all the values you moved from the left side to the right m.) Click OK

we can analyse this using the excel , please note spss is a commercial software.

However , the findings and output will remain the same

We enter the data in excel and then goto data > data analysis tab and select t test , please see the excel screenshots below

df = 26 , p value - 0.0121 and t stat = -2.696

as the p value is less tha 0.05 , hence at alpha of 0.05 the results are statisitcally signficant and we conclude that the mean values of the 2 groups are signficantly different
