You and your friend are pushing a 286 kg cart on a theatre stage in order to move it to the northwest corner. You pushing the cart witha 52-N force that points directly to the west; while your friend a 89-N force pointing north. what is the acceleration of the cart assuming there is no loss due to friction?

Answer #1

52 N force is applying in the direction of west i.e. -X direction
and 89 N is applying in the direction of north i.e. Y direction
hence the net force on the block
= (522 + 892)1/2 = 103.078 N
We know that force = mass*acceleration
103.078 = 286*a
a = 0.36 m/s2

    A 27000 kg sailboat experiences an eastward force of 21800 N due to tide pushing its hull while the wind pushes the sails with a force of 59500 N directed toward the northwest (45◦westward of North or 45◦ northward of West). What is the magnitude of the resultant acceleration of the sailboat? Answer in units of m/s 2

    You and your friend Yuri are trying to move a couch, which weighs 80 kg. Yuri is pushing on the couch with a force of 30 Newtons, while you push the couch with a force of 100 Newtons in a direction perpendicular to the direction Yuri is pushing. In what direction and with what magnitude will the couch accelerate? Ignore friction.

    Two playful cats are pushing on either sides of a 3.0 kg box that can move over a very slippery floor. The black cat pushes with a 9.0 N force, acting due east, while the yellow cat uses a 8.7 N force, pushing 49° north of west. What is the magnitude of the box's acceleration? Assume that the cats are pushing perfectly horizontally to the floor (no vertical forces).

    2) Grandma is pushing her grocery cart (mass: 15 kg) for the length of the cereal aisle (18 m meters long) with a 60 N force. Two of the wheel are stuck however, and therefore there is friction with the ground. The coefficient of friction between the cart and the ground is 0.4. a) Draw a free body diagram of this situation. b) Calculate the done by each of the forces. c) Using any method you choose, determine the final...

    A 1.0-kg cart and a 0.50-kg cart sit at different positions on a low-friction track. You push on the 1.0-kg cart with a constant 3.5-N force for 0.20 m . You then remove your hand, and the cart slides 0.35 m and strikes the 0.50-kg cart.By what amount does your force change the kinetic energy of the system's center of mass?

    You are helping your friend move a new refrigerator into his kitchen. You apply a horizontal force of 263 N in the negative x direction to try and move the 54 kg refrigerator. The coefficient of static friction is 0.67. A) How much static frictional force does the floor exert on the refrigerator? Give both magnitude (in N) and direction. B) What maximum force (in N) do you need to apply before the refrigerator starts to move?
