It begins to assemble

Microtubules are polymers of tubulin protein. They are made up of dimers of alpha and beta tubulin. These dimers repeat themselves to produce long hollow cylindrical structure which we call as microtubules.

The alpha and beta tubulin associate with each other to form microtubules polymer when GTP bound to this dimers is hydrolysed to the GDP and inorganic phosphate.

GTP is bound to the dimers in the disassembled form but when they associate with each other to assemble into microtubules, GDP is formed.
