a) With respect to building electrical distribution systems, discuss in 7-10 lines about power quality.

Answer:

  • Power Quality is defined as the steady voltage supply through out the circuit within the preferred range and steady AC(alternating currents).
  • In electrical distribution systems power quality is one of the important thing to be taken care in the maintenance of the electrical equipment. The device can be a electric motor that runs in a Industry or any load .
  • Generally Power Quality has to be maintained good for avoiding the equipment failure, Electrical accidents like short circuits.
  • It checks the ability of the electric output and the load input given.
  • The following are the issues with Power Quality:
  1. Equipment fail due to natural calamities like Thunderstorms and heavy wind.
  2. Circuits breakup without being overloaded
  3. An electric equipment which is not portable.
  4. Loose connections in wiring.
  • These Power Quality issues may effect the users, manufactures of equipments, distributors and installers.
  • Today country's economy is mostly depended on the quality of electric power and it can be achieved by continuous monitoring of power.

b) Suggest methods of improving and maintaining power quality

Answer:

  1. By maintaining Voltage stability.
  2. Continuous Power check
  3. By reducing the Harmonics.
  4. Making sure that the connections and wiring are done properly, so that no loose connections, any short circuits can be avoided.
  5. By avoiding Voltage Dip and voltage fluctuations.

c) Use a Phasor diagram to support your answer for the above part (b).
