The acceleration of electron in a potential V can be written as, a = (e/m) V
Where V is the electric potential.
Acceleration of electron is easy to measure since it involves measuring the deflection of electrons on a fluorescent screen.

It is easy to measure e/m ratio since it comes directly in a quantity that we can measure comfortably. On the contrary, neither charge e or mass m does not appear individually. This is the reason why the charge of the electron was measured much later (1911) than the e/m ratio (1897).
