  1. Why are there more retro-elements that generally account for a larger fraction of the genome than there are transposable elements like the Ac/Ds elements of maize, a simple DNA transposon?

Because retroelements represents both old and new retroelement insertions and they have a tendency to amplify rapidly for a few tens of millions of years and then become inactive. Also they cant be eliminiated once they are inserted.
