What kind of issues would you face if you were given an assignment to Japan? What would you do to prepare?
Answer
✓ international assignments are always challenging, because, of the differences in the work environment, cultural values, behaviours, legal rules and regulations, and various other factors. If I am offered an international assignment, to Japan, I would find issues like differences in culture, language, work environment, and also lifestyle, living standards and other aspects viz, food habits, climate, dressing, etc.
It will be difficult to learn Japanese language, for staying there and being able to communicate with the people for necessary things. English can be used as a business language, but to stay in the country and adapt their culture for a few months can be challenging, and demands certain knowledge about the traditions, their language, and other aspects.
Learning and adapting to the work patterns can be difficult, because of the policies of that unit. Another concern could be to decide for taking the family there. This will be a serious issue, because, family members may not be able to adjust there, and can't accommodate or fulfill the needs with the pay package provided.
✓ to meet those challenges and to prepare for the assignment, I have to go through appropriate training. I need to learn the Japanese basic language, have to understand their cultural values, traditions and work patterns. I have to negotiate the pay package for the assignment and must study the environment of the Japan, to decide whether to take my family with me or not. For this issue, I can have a prior visit to the country and identify what extra care I must take. Apart from that, I can also take guidance from past expatriates, who can help to stay safe and complete the work with minimum difficulties.
