Some of the research methods used to study brain structure and function are:

EEG (Electroencephalogram) - The EEG is a technique that records the brain's activity by using electrodes that are placed around the person's head. It can show if a person is alert, drowsy, sleeping or under anesthesia because the brainwave patterns differ during each state.

MRI ( Magnetic Resonance Imaging ) - MRI uses a very strong magnetic and radio waves and can be used to detect detailed images of our brain.

PET ( Positron Emission Tomography) - A PET scan is an imaging test and can be used to find how our brains are functioning.

TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) - TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the nerve cells in our brains to improve the condition of a patient suffering from depression.

MEG(Magnetoencephalography) - MEG is an imaging technique that is used to map our brain's activity, by recording magnetic fields produced by electric currents in the brain using extremely sensitive Magnetometers.
