This play is about Rome. It is a tragedy based on the historical fact that during the Roman Republic. Cassius persuades Brutus against Caesar to join their assassination because they do not want Caesar to gain too much power. Therefore, Brutus and the conspirators kill Caesar. Antony drives the conspirators out of Rome and fights them in a battle. Brutus and Cassius lose and kill themselves, leaving Antony to rule in Rome. I think that I could see many elements of theatrical production we learn in the lecture. I believe I was able to enjoy and immersed in this play because of the scenery,

These help me to understand more about the play.

In this play, scenery plays an important role. This is because it provides a physical environment in which dramatic action becomes a reality. When I see the stage first time, I definitely can think it’s Rome. The architecture creates a realistic sense of place. The three pillars of architecture in the play remind me of the Rome architecture, Pantheon. Also, the actors take advantage of the architecture. For example, when there is a battle in the play, there were many actors in the stage. Not only the soldiers are fighting each other on the stairs, but also they appear and exit behind the pillars. Because they took properly advantage of the architecture, I felt more involved in the play realistic about the play. These factors seem to make viewers more immersive.

Moreover, theatrical lighting helps the play convey information and atmosphere about dramatic action. There are many dramatic actions in the play, but one of them I remember in my view was about the moment Caesar was assassinated. When Caesar refuses to hear the warnings of others and goes to the capitol, the lighting style was bright and normal. However, as soon as the other conspirators and Brutus stab Caesar, the lighting was focusing on the assassination of Caesar and made the rest of the space dark. The lighting style conveyed a serious mood to audiences. I personally in the scene, the combination of lighting style and the sound of the drum was perfect to make not only the scene focus on the assassination but also makes the audience feel nervous.

Furthermore, there is the relationship between audience and actors. I think that it helps audience have empathy into characters. For instance, When Brutus and Cassius enter the Forum following Caesar's assassination, a crowd of Roman citizens follows them. These people are shocked, confused and deeply disturbed by what has just transpired. The citizens shout out “We will be satisfied! Let us be satisfied” and repeat the words again and again on the audience’s area. The interaction between audiences and the Roman citizens have me feel one of the citizens as well. Therefore, I think that this theatrical production strongly helped me feel on the side of the characters which was the most important part of enjoying the play.

Overall, this play was special to me more than others. I learned many things about play in this course, so I could see the play from a different perspective that I cannot see before. The scenery played a big part in the play. In this case, the architecture creates the feeling of Rome which I was able to more focus on the play. The lighting style provided information and an atmosphere about Caesar’s assassination that the scene looks more serious moment and makes audience feel nervous.          Also, the relationship between audience and actors has me feel the empathy of Roman citizens. Therefore, because of elements of theatrical production, not only I could see the play from a different perspective, but also I could understand more about the play.
