Let R be the event of selecting a criminal case, C the event of selecting a civil case, E the event of selecting an even-numbered case, and O the event of selecting an odd case.

He has criminal cases numbered 1,2,3,4 and civil numbered 1,2,3,4,5.

So, selection a criminal case number 4 defines the event

RE (i.e. both criminal as well as even)or

C'O'(not civil means criminal as well as not odd means even) or

RO'(i.e. criminal as well as not odd means even) or

C'E(i.e. not civil means criminal as well as an even-numbered case).
