Answer #1

Ethylene oxide is used in sterilization of medical equipment instead of water (steam) because ethylene oxide is gas and it can sterilize at a low temperature to kill microorganisms. The gas is poisonous which attacks the nucleic acid and proteins of microorganisms which destroys them.

The main advantage of ehylene oxide is-

*  It can sterilize heat or moisture sensitive equipments without harming them, which cannot be done by water vapour as it can damage those instruments.

The main disadvantages of using ethylene oxide are-

* It is highly inflammable, irritant, explosive, carcinogenic. Hence it is used in 10-20% concentration mixed with inert gases like either CO2 or dichloro-difluromethane.

* It has lenghty cycle time, high in cost and it's potential hazards to human being.
