Why is the skin such a good first line of defense against pathogenic microorganisms?
There are two types of first line of defenses against microbes in our body.
1. Physical - These act as surface barriers to microbes. Example - skin
2. Chemical - These inhiting the growth of bacteria.
Examples - sweat, tears, mucous
Skin is a surface barrier. It has following properties which make it an important first line of defense :
A. It is waterproof, thick and dry covering of our body.
B. It has got sweat glands making the surface salty, preventing the growth of bacteria.
C. It has a low pH, creating acidic conditions for the growth of bacteria.
D. It has sebaceous glands which secretes wax, inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
All these conditions of our skin makes it a bad habitat for the growth of bacteria, unless it gets wounded and bacteria enter into blood stream.

Why is the skin such a good first line of defense against pathogenic microorganisms?
The skin is the first line of defense against pathogenic invaders. Below give the pathogens which invade the epidermis layer, the hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and the fascia in the subcutaneous layer.

How does a person build a line of defense against a pathogen? What is the difference in antigenic drift and antigenic shift?
QUESTION 38 A pathogenic bacterium enters the body. Will it cause an infectious disease? Yes. That is why it is termed a pathogen. Yes, if the person is not immediately treated with antibiotics. No. It depends on the number of bacteria that enter the body and the quality of the person's immune defense Yes, if the person has not been immunized against that bacterium.
in terms of innate immunity what is the body's second line of defense against microbial infection/disease? explain the roles of the formed elements in the blood, lymphatic system, and phagocytes.
