Observe the material of the electrical light switches, the modern electrical light switches are made up of bakelite. It is a polymer made up of two monomers.
- Phenol
- Formaldehyde
Bakelite is a thermosetting polymer in nature.
Hard plastic resulting from the bakelite is used to manufacture the switches. This material must have high insulating properties too. This material is achieved by the compression molding process.
The compression molding process involves a condensation reaction between phenol and formaldehyde. This reaction is completed under high pressure and temperature in a time frame of a few minutes of curing, using asbestos as a filler material.
