Part 3:  In an effort to recoup some of the cost of IT for the company, Chris’s boss plans to start a consulting business using the resources of the company.  The company’s board approves of this move.   After a few months, Chris’s boss approaches him and asks Chris to plan for the development and deployment of a “bleeding edge” application for a possible client.  There is little Chris or anyone else in the company knows about this new technology, but Chris does his homework as best he can and builds a proposal.  He feels about 50 percent sure about the technology and costs involved, but time is of the essence, and the proposal needs to be submitted.

Questions:  Should the company have bid on the project and How forthright should Chris’s company be with the client?

Answer #1

The company is trying to be efficient financially and it is indeed a good thing. But it might result in rendering the services inefficiently. Here, Chris does not know bleeding edge technology but the company decided to develop and deploy it. He will try as hard as possible to get the job done but it it not like an experienced professional did it. As a result the end product or service might not be satisfactory to the client and this might cause even more losses to the company.

Company did the right thing by bidding, but it must have also stated the amount of time required to train its professionals, to complete the process and to render the service. It must make it very clear to the client that it requires time but it possesses the professionals who can complete the project very effectively and the client will be satisfactory.

The company must be very forthright with client because, it makes the client to trust the company because of its honesty, the client might give any other projects to the company. It is also important to be direct because is the rendered service is not good, the company might face huge issues like legal and financial.
