Suppose you want to test to see if there is a difference in steady-state hemoglobin levels (measured in gdL) for patients with different types of sickle-cell disease. The two diseases for which you will study are:

HB SS - Commonly referred to as "sickle cell anemia" (I will abbreviate this as X)

HB SC - Commonly referred to as "sickle cell disease" (I will abbreviate this as Y)

Although both have their complications, HB SS is referred to as the "less severe" of the two. The goal is to test the claim:

with a two sided alternative:

with a level of 12% level of statistical significance. Prior studies have indicated that both measures of central tendency and measures of variation are different between both of these types of diseases. Suppose you collect a set of data with HB SS and measure their steady-state hemoglobin levels to be:

7.2 7.7 8.3 8.7 9.1 9.2 10.1 10.3 10.4

and you do the sample for a set of patients with HB SC:

10.7 10.9 11.2 11.3 11.6 11.7 11.9 12.0
12.2 12.3 12.5 12.7 13.1 13.5 13.7 14.1

a)

For our hypothesis test:

- The point estimate for the population mean difference is: (2 decimal places).

- The marginal error for the associated confidence interval is: (2 decimal places).

b)

The confidence interval for the population mean difference in steady-state hemoglobin levels between HB SS and HBCC is given to be: (round to 2 decimal places for both boundaries)
