Write a one-page summary on Jazz history, Form and Performance.

The History

The formal history of Jazz begins at the dawn of the twentieth century in New Orleans. A polyglot pot, New Orleans was added to the United States through Thomas Jefferson’s Louisiana purchase of 1803. As a complex city, it was an anomaly indeed, the only city of any size in South at the time. Because of its French (and also Spanish) heritage, it was (and still) a lively place, more given to rowdy public celebrations like Mardi Grass than its said counterparts in Protestant America. Its musical life was extradentary: throughout the year, the humid night air was pierced by the sounds of parade bands, string bands and dance orchestras.

The Forms

Despite the brevity of its history, the ancestry of Jazz is murky. Like most African- American music’s, it is a hybrid. In certain ways it is an offshoot of European classical music, using that tradition’s fixed intonation of twelve equal steps within the octave, borrowing much of its instrumentation (piano, bass, trumpet, clarinet etc.) and displaying a firm command of chromatic tonal harmony. But this does not begin to describe jazz. Much of what makes it distinctive, clearly separate from classical music, lies in its African roots. Tracing these roots is not easy. Language disappeared because slaves were captured from diverse regions of Africa, they dropped their native tongues in favour of English. Entire village traditions would have quickly faded from memory. Not even the drum traditions from the coastal portions of West Africa most plagued by slavery could be easy transplanted: drum was routinely banned in colonies out of fear that their sounds could be used to incite slave rebellions. Africans came to the new world with only their bodies and their minds, with few resources and little freedom. The harshness of their labour encourage them to focus on the present and forget their pass.

The Performance

In the early days it was rare for jazz to be enjoyed in concert auditoria, as when Benny Goodman made his celebrated 1938 appearance in Carnegie Hall. But it is now a routine component of the programmes in major concert venues, where audience behavior is not much different from that for classical concerts, though their musicians expected applause at the end of each solo as they do in the clubs. Hass Jazz become an art music- or, in the phrase coined by pianist Billy Taylor, America’s classical music? This perhaps, it the question for which jazz has long been waiting for an answer. Many of its advocated have felt that it has been an art music from its beginning. But it has only recently begun to acquire the trappings of official support that such tradition normally expects in the United States. And its about time: although its African derived beat is much closer to commercial pop than European art music jazz is no longer “popular music” or a “mass” music and it needs support to survive. Yet the music’s loosens, its willingness to try almost anything, suggests that jazz will never become what many have feared. A second-rate classical music clinging to its achievements of yesteryear. Its semi-marginal status allows it to remain what it’s been since mid-century; a virtuosic music, made by musicians for musicians. With one foot in the academy, and the other in the street, jazz is in a position to surprise everybody for decades to come.

It's about jazz a guy whose history started in 20th century.

Hass Jazz become a craftsmanship music-or, in the expression authored by piano player Billy Taylor, America's old style music. This maybe, it the inquiry for which jazz has for quite some time been hanging tight for an answer.

Form:

In specific ways it is a branch of European old style music, utilizing that convention's fixed inflection of twelve equivalent strides inside the octave, getting a lot of its instrumentation (piano, bass, trumpet, clarinet and so forth.) and showing a firm direction of chromatic tonal congruity.

Also, better late than never: in spite of the fact that its African inferred beat is a lot nearer to business popular than European craftsmanship music jazz is never again "well known music" or a "mass" music and it needs backing to endure.

Performance:

The Performance In the good all days it was uncommon for jazz to be delighted in show auditoria, as when Benny Goodman showed up in Carnegie Hall.

Its semi-minor status enables it to remain what it's been since mid-century; a virtuosic music, made by artists for artists.

Not by any means the drum customs from the seaside bits of West Africa most tormented by servitude could be simple transplanted: drum was routinely prohibited in states out of dread that their sounds could be utilized to affect slave uprisings.
