The boiling point of diphenyl ether is 259 oC. It dissolves many nonpolar compounds but it is not a desirable solvent for crystallization. Why? Hint: Find the melting point of this compound and compare that with most nonpolar compounds.)
Melting point of this compound 26°C
Melting point of common organic solents are lower than this.
In crystallization, we will be bringing the temperature down and the components of solutes will start to crystallize in the liquid solvent. But if the components are only crystallizing beow 26°C, then if we use diphenylether as solvent, it will solidify before the crystallization of components!!!! Which is a stupid thing to have.
For example,
Toluene have melting point of -95°C
Diethyl ether have melting point -116°C
They have very low melting point and thus can be used in crystallization of suitable solutes.
