The Wicomico County Board of Education is in the process of developing a new
exam to evaluate the reading level of all fourth-graders in the county. To pilot the
exam, it was administered to a random sample of 20 fourth-graders. This sample of
students had a mean exam score of 72.3 and a standard deviation of 9.7 points.

a) Assuming that the population of exam scores is normally distributed, construct
and interpret a 98% confidence interval to estimate the mean exam score for the
population of Wicomico County fourth-graders.

b)Does this sample of exam scores provide sufficient evidence for the county to
conclude that the mean exam score for the population of county fourth-graders
exceeds 70 points?

c) Is it plausible that the mean exam score for the population of county fourth-
graders equals 70 points?
