Let us assume that you decide to do a Lipitor test (Cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old. You have given men a month of supplies. After 30 days, you took sample of 100 men who took Lipitor and measured the mean and standard deviation of Cholesterol numbers. Here are couple of questions that are related to null hypothesis.

Q1. After you completed the hypothesis test, you determined that you reject the null hypothesis. What does this mean in terms of men who took Lipitor?

Q2. After you completed the hypothesis test, you determined that you fail to reject the null hypothesis. What does this mean in terms of men who took Lipitor?

Answer #1

In this case , we have to test Lipitor(cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old.

We have given men a month of supplies of Lipitor.

After 30 days , we took sample of 100 men who took Lipitor and measured mean and standard deviation of cholesterol numbers .

Let us define our Hypothesis in this case:

Our Null Hypothesis(H0) :

H0 : There is not significant effect of Lipitor(cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old.

Our Alternatice Hypothesis(H1) :

H1 : There is Significant effect of Lipitor(cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old.

Now,

Solution(1)

After completed the hypothesis test,

If we reject the Null Hypothesis(H0),

It means that there is a Significant effect of Lipitor(cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old

Or we can say that cholesterol number is reduced of men who took Lipitor.

Solution(2)

After completed the hypothesis test,

If we fail to reject Null Hypothesis(H0),

It means that there is not Significant effect of Lipitor(cholesterol reducing drug) on men age over 55 years old.

Or we can say that cholesterol number is not reduced of men who took Lipitor.

    A pharmaceutical company believes its Alzheimer’s drug may have an effect on cortical atrophy. If it decreases cortical atrophy, it may be a promising candidate for further drug trials; if it increases cortical atrophy, it may provide insight into the mechanism of Alzheimer’s disease. Thus the company decides to test the drug on rats, as either result may hold future benefits. Among 115 transgenic rats (genetically engineered to induce Alzheimer’s), 65 rats receive the drug over 6 months, 50 rats...
