Heart rate during laughter. Laughter is often called “the best medicine,” since studies have shown that laughter can reduce muscle tension and increase oxygenation of the blood. In the International Journal of Obesity (Jan. 2007), researchers at Vanderbilt University investigated the physiological changes that accompany laughter. Ninety subjects (18–34 years old) watched film clips designed to evoke laughter. During the laughing period, the researchers measured the heart rate (beats per minute) of each subject,
with the following summary results:

  • Mean = 73.5,
  • Standard Deviation = 6.
  • n = 90 (we can treat this as a large sample and use z)

It is well known that the mean resting heart rate of adults is 71 beats per minute.

1) Construct 95% Confidence interval using z-value. What is the upper bound of CI?

Use 4 significant decimal places for your answer, and use the proper rules of rounding. I am looking for just the answer, not the equation.

2) Construct 95% Confidence interval using z value. What is the lower bound of CI?

Use 4 significant decimal places for your answer, and use the proper rules of rounding. I am looking for just the answer, not the equation.

3) Calculate the value of the test statistic.(z*)

Use 4 significant decimal places for your answer, and use the proper rules of rounding. I am looking for just the answer, not the equation.

4) If alpha = 05, find the critical value of the rejection region for this test.   Use three decimal places and use the proper rules of rounding.

5) What is your conclusion in regards to the Null Hypothesis?

a) Fail to reject Ho

b) Reject Ho

Fighting probability of fallow deer bucks. A study of fallow deer bucks fighting during the mating season looked whether a fight occurred by whether the initiator won or lost. The researchers recorded 167 encounters between two bucks, one of which clearly initiated the encounter with the other. A summary of the fight status of the initiated encounters is provided in the accompanying table. Suppose we select 1 of these 167 encounters and note the outcome of the two variables (fight...

Assume the credit card balances of younger college educated employed persons are normally distributed with a mean of $ 6,358 and a standard deviation of $1,907 – assume these are population values. 2. Now you randomly select 81 credit card holders. What is the probability that their mean credit card balance is less than $5750? Use the standard normal table for this, but this time use the population mean and standard error (standard deviation/SQRT(81)). Use 4 significant decimal places for...

Since previous studies have reported that elite athletes are often deficient in their nutritional intake (for example, total calories, carbohydrates, protein), a group of researchers decided to evaluate Canadian high-performance athletes. A total of n = 324 athletes from eight Canadian sports centers participated in the study. One reported finding was that the average caloric intake among the n-208 women was 2,403.7 kilocalories per day (kcal/d). The recommended amount is 2,807.5 kcal/d. Is there evidence that female Canadian athletes are...
