Why is the interesting “take” on whether or not a project or intervention is successful as defined by meeting time, budget and capabilities expectations? For example, any IT project completed on schedule, within budget, and with the exact functionality outlined in the original specification is a success, right? Not so, says Helen Putkszta, senior consultant in such matters. In fact, claims Putkszta, completing a project over budget, with scaled-down functionality, can represent the best outcome if the project also delivers business value.

Answer #1

I feel it is extremely important for a project leader or manager to ensure the success of the project or intervention. It is in terms of goal and objectives achieved, resources utilized and whether the project or intervention was completed within the stipulated time frame. Thus confirming if the efforts put in, the resources allocated to the project have been properly utilized to achieve positive output or not. Using resources such as material, money, labor, space, etc. wisely and effectively is the basis behind success of the project or intervention. Firstly, it achieves the organizational goal. Secondly, it helps obtain increased productivity and save costs and resources. Therefore, we can conclude that the success of the project or intervention is important to be determined in order to evaluate the value of resources invested in it and understand its impact on the organization.
