A rigid stainless steel chamber contains 160 Torr of methane, CH4, and excess oxygen, O2, at 150.0 °C. A spark is ignited inside the chamber, completely combusting the methane. What is the change in total pressure within the chamber following the reaction? Assume a constant temperature throughout the process.

Answer #1

The balanced reaction that occurs is:

CH4 (g) + 2 O2 (g) = CO2 (g) + 2 H2O (g)

It is observed that 3 gaseous moles become another 3 gaseous moles.

This means that there was no change in the number of initial and final moles, therefore, there was also no change in pressure in the system.
