“I have news!” said Bert excitedly. “What’s new?” you asked. Bert is your friend whom you have known for a
long time and he recently finished his graduate school work in Petrochemical Engineering. He is a couple years
ahead of you and you have always looked up to him for his “science skills”. “I got my first job at a Petrochemical
company” announced Bert. “ I will get to work with crude oil and study properties of the components.” You felt
happy for your friend and your recent experience in your organic chemistry class got you curious about the
‘components of crude oil.’ This idea has really gotten into you and you want to find out more. You asked Dr.
Sharma about this. “Gasoline is a mixture of hydrocarbons from C-5 to C-8. These could be branched or straight
chain molecules” she explained. “But what burns in the engine”, you asked.” “Everything, all hydrocarbons in
Gasoline will burn. Gasoline is a great fuel but often certain additives need to be added to improve its
properties.” She then talked about hydrocarbons, their physical and chemical properties, conformations etc.
She promises to help you apply this new information very soon. You are now very excited about all this new
information about alkanes –a mixture of which is pumped into your car to move around. “Pretty cool!,” you
think.
Later in the week you see a Mini-Case reflection exercise to put your thoughts together about alkanes and
cycloalkanes. Please answer these questions and upload ALL sheets on CANVAS assignment. Use appropriate
ACS method of citation when applicable.
i. Gasoline is made up of alkanes. Write the molecular formula for all alkanes found in gasoline.(1 point)
ii. Draw the line-angle skeletal structures of ALL isomers of heptane and octane that might be present
in gasoline. Provide the systematic name including the IUPAC names of all substituents if
applicable.(Attach additional sheets if required) (7 points)
iii. Considering Octane and its isomers to be the major constituent of gasoline, write a balanced equation
for combustion of the fuel in in internal combustion engine of your car.

C8C18 , C7H16, C6H14, C5H12.

ii. Answer attached as copy please find attachment.

Isomers of ocatne with names

Isomers of heptane with names

iii. Answer: C8H18(l) +12.5 O2(l) -----> 8CO2(g) + 9H2O(l)

You’ve both been craving burritos, so she picks up a couple and brings them by. As you sit down and start eating, Maria looks at your burrito bursting with ingredients, and looks at her own burrito, which is plainer and contains only rice, sour cream, and cheese. She wonders out...

In a lot of properties I’ve worked, there is an ongoing conflict between managers in charge of covering costs and those directly responsible for getting and satisfying guests.” “Like Mark and Pam,” interrupted Damario. “Yes, like Mark and Pam. That’s why things got a little animated. I’m convinced they both have the...
