A study claims that the average hours of sleep on a weeknight was 7 hours with a standard deviation of 1.6 hours.

a) How many hours do you (typically) sleep on a weeknight? How many standard deviations above or below the average are your hours of sleep? (Hint: find your standard score).

b) What percentage of individuals sleep less than you do? Show your calculation,

c) What proportion of individuals sleep at least as much as you do? Show your calculation.

Answer #1

let X is  hours of sleep on a weeknight

E(X)=7 SD(X)=1.6

a)

typically i sleep 6 hours on a weeknight

so

difference =7-6 =1 =0.625*1.6 =0.625SD(X)

So my sleep time is 0.625 SD less than average sleep time.

b)

we have to find P(X<6)

now

so required % is 26.6%

c)

we have to find P(X>6)

now

P(X>6)=1-P(X<6) =1-0.266=0.734

The average adult is supposed to get 8 hours of sleep a night. A "sleep habits" survey answered by 28 randomly selected New Yorkers contained the question "How much sleep do you get per night?" The sample average was 7.75 hours, with a corresponding sample standard deviation of 0.8 hours. Conduct a hypothesis test to see if there is evidence that New Yorkers (who live, after all, in "the city that never sleeps") on average get less than 8 hours...

00 Pilots who cannot maintain regular sleep hours due to their work schedule often suffer from insomnia. A recent study on sleeping patterns of pilots focused on quantifying deviations from regular sleep hours. A random sample of 15 commercial airline pilots was interviewed, and the pilots in the sample reported the time at which they went to sleep on their most recent working day. The study gave the sample mean and standard deviation of the times reported by pilots, with...

Sleep: Assume the general population gets an average of 7 hours of sleep per night. You randomly select 45 college students and survey them on their sleep habits. From this sample, the mean number of hours of sleep is found to be 6.89 hours with a standard deviation of 0.40 hours. You claim that college students get less sleep than the general population. That is, you claim the mean number of hours of sleep for all college students is less...
