Synthesis and Purification of Acetylferrocene:
1.Where on the ferrocene molecule was the second acetyl group
added? Explain why this position is favored on the molecule.
2.Explain why ferrocene has a higher Rf value on silica gel TLC
than acetylferrocene.
1 The first acetyl group deactivates the ring towards electrophilic substitution reaction so the next group enters the opposite end.
2.Ferrocene is a less polar in nature while acetyl Ferrocene is more polar. Since silica gel is polar so the bonding affinity between Ferrocene and silica will be less This means that less polar substance will move the plate readily having higher RF value than acetyl ferrocence moving slowly on TLC plate giving lower RF value

imagine that you were tasked with synthesis 100g of acetylferrocene using the reaction (ferrocene under H3PO4 and Acetic anhydride to form acetylferrocene). 1. how would you use TLC to assist with maximizing the yield of the reaction 2. explain it
These questions are from an experiment where we had a mixture of Ferrocene, acetylferrocene and diacetyl ferrocene and we separated each by using column chromatography. Before doing the column chromatography we did TLC analysis to ensure that we did, in fact, have a mixture of these 3 compounds. During the column chromatography we first eluted the ferrocene using pure hexane. Then we eluted the acetylferrocene using a 1:1 mixture of hexane and methylene chloride. Then we eluted the diacetylferrocene using...
1.) a.) In the synthesis of ferrocene, why is potassium hydroxide (KOH) added to the cyclopentadiene? b.) Which is more polar, 1,1-diacetyl ferrocene or ferrocene? Which will have the lower Rf value?
1. When 2-propanol was used as the developing solvent, two substances moved with the solvent front (Rf= 1) during TLC analysis on a silica gel plate. Can you conclude that they are identical? If not, what additional experiment(s) would you perform? 2. The Rf value of compound A is 0.34 when a TLC plate is developed in hexane and 0.44 when the plate is developed in diethyl ether. Compound B has an Rf value of 0.42 in hexane and 0.60...
1. A mixture containing Compound X and Compound Y is analyzed using silica gel TLC. a. If Compound X has an Rf value of 0.7 and Compound Y has an Rvalue of 0.3, which compound is more polar? Explain. b. The solvent traveled 50 mm. How far did Compound Y travel? 2. Why isn't it reasonable for an R. value to be greater than 1? 3. How many spots would you expect to see if you conducted a TLC separation...
9. Based on looking at your TLC plate taken during step 2 of Dilantin synthesis, answer the following questions (a) Which is more polar, benzoin or benzil? Circle Below. Benzoin Benzil (b) Now look at the structures of benzoin and benzil. Specifically explain why one of these compounds has a lower Rr value than the other. You must address structure in your answer. Explain in one or two sentences (c) How can you tell by TLC if your reaction went...

1. a) Why does biphenyl have a higher Rf value than either benzophenone or triphenylmethanol? Explain based on the structures and their effect on mobility in the TLC process. b) Which compound, benzophenone or triphenylmethanol has a higher Rf value? Explain, based on their structures, how you can predict this. c) You developed your TLC using a 10% mixture of diethyl ether in petroleum ether. Petroleum ether is a mixture of non-polar alkanes, so this TLC solvent is composed of...
