1. Why are there very few calico cats that are male?

Coat color is determined by a gene which is X linked. A female cat has two X chromosomes one of which she inherits from mother and one she inherits from father.

If one X chromosome has an orange color and one is having black then she develops a calico pattern.

But in males, there is only one X so they are either orange or black. Only one in every three thousand males is a calico. This occurs when they have an abnormality called Klinefelter's syndrome.

In this condition, they inherit two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome. But they are sterile.
