1. Let’s assume you want to research prisoner abuse. You need a way to measure prisoner abuse so that when you gather data you can record the level of abuse. You could just have a dichotomous variable that indicates if abuse happened or not. What is the mean of such variable? (0.5 point)

Answer #1

Suppose our dichotomous variable is X and it is a nominal variable which has 2 categories - abuse happened, abuse did not happen. Since we have two outcomes, we can define our variable like this:
X = 1, if "abuse happened" with probability 'p'.
= 0, if "abuse did not happen" with probability '1 - p'.

This is like a Bernoulli variable and the mean of X will be = p = E(X). If we consider p = 1/2, then E(X) = p = 0.5 = mean of the variable.

    2. Sometimes you want to sort lots of data, but you only need the smallest (or largest) K items instead of all items. For example, maybe you want to give awards to the ten students with the best GPAs. If you have thousands of students, you could waste time sorting all of them just to find the top ten. Perhaps we can adapt an existing sorting algorithm so that it works faster if we just want to find and sort...

    One Way ANOVA: You want to know if keeping people on a diet for a longer period of time will lead to greater weight loss. So you decide to run three groups of people. Those who don’t diet, those who diet for two weeks and those who diet for 4 weeks. For each group you measure the amount of weight they lost over the corresponding time period. This is what you find Non-dieter: -1 1 0 2 -1 2-week: 2...

    Step-by-step explanations are preferred; just the answer doesn't help me learn. Let’s say we collect data on a sample of 5 people regarding pretest aggression. The aggression measure is on a scale of 1 = low aggression to 10 = high aggression. After initial data collection, we do an intervention aimed at improving self-control and reducing aggression. After the intervention, we measure the same 5 people with the same aggression measure to get a posttest measure of aggression. Here are...

    You need to create your own connection string. So you need to know what each of the parts of the connection string mean. The connection string needs to know the location where the SQL Server resides, and that's usually a domain name or IP address. This may vary! Then you need to know who you are talking to, and that is the name of the server. This is the initial catalog. The AttachDbFilename shows the name of the file and...

Find the appropriate measure of variation. The measure of variation chosen here should match the measure of center chosen in Part 1. Find the graph(s) needed to appropriately describe the data.
