Answer #1

A chief security officer in a company is responsible to ensure the security of assets, personnel, and information (physical and digital). With the increased use of information technology, this role has become much more crucial and sensitive in the business world, a company’s and its customers’ information has become much more vulnerable in the digital world than was in the physical information recording methods that were used traditionally. Primarily, the term chief security officer is used mostly for the IT Security team lead in companies, but it expands to include the overall corporate security along with the company’s IT assets. Hence, many times the title of a chief security officer is also referred to as chief information security officer in companies.

Now, in a start-up, as a chief security officer, the roles and responsibilities will be more or less similar to other small to medium size company, but there will be a much higher emphasis on information security as in today’s business environment, information acts as the real asset to companies.

As the chief security officer, I would like to device security policies for managing day-to-day operations, which would include assessing and mitigating risks to the company’s assets and policy to deal with crisis situations. I would also like to incorporate policies that can help in limiting the company’s liabilities and thus preventing it to get exposed to higher physical, informational and financial risks. As a start-up, the probability of being exposed to such risks is much higher, owing to the flexibility start-ups offer to its employees to bring in better business.

Moreover, being a start-up, to attract more business, adherence to certain compliances becomes mandatory. As the chief security officer, I would like to ensure that the company is compliant with the local, national and global rules and regulations, especially in the areas of privacy, and health and safety.

Moreover, start-ups flourish on innovation. Ensuring security should not prevent the company from being innovative, hence as the chief security officer, it should be my job to conduct proper research in security management solutions that can keep the organization safe, while offering the flexibility that start-up needs.

The chief security officer will also be responsible to plan for loss and fraud prevention and act proactively to align security management as the strategic asset for the company rather than a damage control tool.

Hence, I will need to understand what kind of data is being used in the start-up, and how that can be compromised to cause any material threat to the company or its customers and thus put a plan in place to prevent it.

Lastly, as the finances or start-ups are often limited, I would have to define a security priority based on the company’s needs and thus spend according to the company’s budget constraints and financial directives. I would also develop a security team to work with the federal, state and local enforcement agencies.
