To get holistic auditory message, both independent and complementary information has to be integrated. They are required to "fill in" to get continuous perception, if any of the information is missed to get captured.

This article studied one such fill-in process - auditory continuity illusion. Participants were made to listen long target tones, in cluster with short masking tones with pseudo-random spectro-temporal locations. The target tones were real or illusory. Though the illusory targets were salient within mixtures, they were not exactly similar as real targets. Results found that in the presence of competing sounds, continuity illusion occurs and in the complex auditory situations, obscured objects can be detected.

Continuity illusion -It is one of the laws governing perception, stipulates that our mind will interpolate or extrapolate perceptual "objects" if the edges of the objects are obscured.
