When mercury (I) chloride precipitate, Hg2Cl2(s) is treated with ammonia, NH3, redox reaction takes place to form grey/black colored precipitate of mercury(Hg) is formed along with the formation of a white precipitate of HgClNH2(s).

The balanced equation is:

Hg2Cl2(s) + 2NH3(aq) -----> HgClNH2(s) + Hg(s) + NH4Cl(aq)

Although HgClNH2(s) is a white precipitate, the solution turns black/grey due to the formation of black/grey colored mercury (Hg).
