Predation is considered to be one of the foremost driving forces in evolution. The guppy Poecile

reticulate displays different life history traits when exposed to various predation pressures in

their natural populations, particularly in terms of reproductive behaviors and success. How

would you test if this species of guppy was displaying evolution or phenotypic plasticity?

Answer #1

Evolution is the process by which all the different living organisms have developed from their ancestors during the history. Phenotypic plasticity is a kind of change which takes place within an organism in its behavior or morphology and even physiology. But this happens only in response to the unique environment.

Two types of experimental populations have been designed in guppies. They are the rivulus communities and the other is the Crenicichla communities. When both the species demography and origin was considered that is the predator community , the focal guppies were known to be the off springs of one of the two communities. It is observed that guppies have already responded to the demography and origin. This tells that the phenotypic plasticity with respect to the environment has contributed in the variation in life history traits .

According to Robert Trivers, why are men generally larger and more physically aggressive than women? Because women are more reproductively “valuable” than men, hence competition for mates is fiercer among men Because men invest more heavily in reproduction than women Because men secrete more testosterone Trivers’ theory does not speculate on the origin of the sex difference in size and physical aggression Although some women are interested in casual sex (short-term mating), research has suggested that there are differences in...

We conducted a comprehensive literature search on drones in conservation up to October 2nd 2018, in line with related studies [10,11,35]. All searches were done by the same person in English, mainly using Google Scholar. This was further complemented through reference harvesting, citation tracking, abstracts in conference programs, and author search, using Research Gate and Mendeley (see PRISMA Flowchart in Supplementary Figure S1 Checklist and list of studies reviewed in Table S1). We then removed duplicate and unrelated results. Finally,...

need help with this .. From the pages 571-587 attached below. 1a) Suppose a population of guppies was infected with a parasite. In that population a mutation results in a parasite resistant genotype that spreads through the population through natural selection. A subsequent mutation in the parasite results in a genotype that is unaffected by the newly evolved resistant guppy genotype. What is the name of the hypothesis that explains this host parasite “arms race”.? 1b) What is this name...
