  4. You’ll see a command prompt window
  5. Type dir \Windows and press Enter to view the files and subdirectories in the \Windows directory (containing system files).
  6. Type copy /? and press Enter to view the documentation for the copy command. Press the spacebar, if necessary, to display the remaining documentation.
  7. Type chkdsk to check the file system and press Enter. When chkdsk is finished, you are likely to see the message “Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50.” because chkdsk cannot write to the event log in this mode. Also, if errors are found, you’ll see a message that you can use chkdsk /f to fix file system errors. See Chapter 7 to review using chkdsk.

Answer:

Check Disk (CHKDSK) is a Utility program that checks hard-drive or (floppy drive) of a system for problems. It is a tool built into the Microsoft Windows operating system to verify the integrity of the data stored on the hard drive. This tool is used to find and solve errors that can corrupt stored data as well as affect the performance of the computer system. There are numerous benefits from regularly running the CHKDSK utility like ensuring that system files are always fine and healthy. However, when this utility program automatically runs on its own with regularity it normally indicates a deeper system problem. Check Disk (CHKDSK) does not intend to detect the presence of failing hard drives but rather keep the Windows file system clean and free up valuable system resources that may prevent the system from attaining maximum performance.

The CHKDSK utility program derived from the ScanDisk tool, which was introduced under the first GUI based operating system of Microsoft. It is slighter altered in newer OS functionality and intent has remained the same. Running the CHKDSK may help the system user-repair bad sector along with damaged or corrupted system files. According to Microsoft, relatively minor files and directory corruption can lead to major corruption on the Windows computer system hard drive if it is not corrected soon after it is detected. The risk is that delaying corrective action can potentially lead to placing major system data in jeopardy. This tool determines the extent of file and file system corruption. As above mentioned, it verifies the logical integrity of a file system on the Windows operating system for both FAT and NTFS files systems. When this command encounters logical inconsistencies it takes action to repair the file system data.
