Answer #1
  • Dc motors are continuous rotation motors. If you apply power, a dc motor will spin until that power source is removed. These are mainly used in anything which needs to spin at high rpm such as car wheels, fans, etc.
  • Unlike DC motor servo motor do not rotate freely. The angle of rotation is limited to 180 degree back and forth. Servo motors receive a control signal which determines an output position and applies power to the DC motor until the shaft turns to the correct position, determined by the position sensor. Servo motors are designed for specific tasks where position needs to be defined more accurately such as controlling the rudder on a boat or moving a robotic arm within a certain range. They are fast, have high torque, accurate rotation within a limited range. They are considered high performance alternative to stepper motor.
  • Stepper motor utilise multiple toothed electromagnets arranged around a central gear to define position. They require an external control circuit to individually energize each electromagnet and make the motor shaft turn. The motor can be turned by precise predefined step angles through a full 360 degree rotation. The design of stepper motors provide a constant holding torque. These are slow, have precise control, easy set up & control. Where servo motors require a feedback mechanism and support circuitry to drive positioning, a stepper motor has positional controls via its nature of rotation by fractional increments. These motors are suited for 3D printers and similar devices where position is fundamental.
