Dialogues – Find the bias caused by self-reference criterion

Dialogue: "Calling in Sick"

MS. PARKER: Sit down, Miss Lim. I'm worried about you. I've noticed you've been calling in sick a lot the last month.

MISS LIM: I'm sorry, ma'am.

MS. PARKER: Ever since I promoted you to office manager. Is the job too much for you?

MISS LIM: Perhaps, ma'am.

MS. PARKER: I don't know what to do. I would have given the job to Mr. Sen or Miss Jiu, but they're not nearly as efficient. Especially these last few weeks.

MISS LIM: Oh no, ma'am. They are very good, and they have been here much longer than I.

Answer #1

Bias resulting from self reference criterion :

"They are very good, and they have been here much longer than I. "

The last dialogue which is a response of Miss Lim in which she holds that Miss jiu and Mr Sen will be as good as her because they have spent much longer time in the organization is a bias caused by self reference criterion as Miss Lim is assuming them to be as good as her because she percieves them related to her performance outcome for the time spent in the organization.

Miss Lim assumes them to be more efficient due to spending more time in the organization leading to better performance than she performed in the particular period of time, this referencing their performance with her.

Therefore by saying "Oh no, ma'am. They are very good, and they have been here much longer than I" produces self reference bias because here Lim is interpreting her counterparts in relation to her performance. .

Therefore Miss jiu and Mr sen are considered good in her perception because she has been performing good in this period of time.
