Discuss the techniques used to successfully implement change in an organization based primarily upon the work of change guru John Kotter. Use examples to aid in your explanation

Kotter’s change model consists of eight steps, such as creating sense of urgency, having a powerful working group to carry out the change effort, creating a vision, communicate the same to everyone, empower others to take action based on the vision, continuous improvement and institutionalize new ideas or ways to achieve the effort. For example, an XYZ organization would like to introduce intrinsic quality initiative to raise the bar towards quality standards. By applying the John Kotter’s eight steps towards this change management , the goals can be achieved by the XYZ.

  • XYZ organization becomes responsive towards market change after evaluating and analyzing the market landscape and create sense of urgency all employee levels to have awareness.
  • To implement the change the organization forms a steering committee to lead the change effort.
  • The senior management creates a vision along with the workable strategies and action plans.
  • The senior management communicates the vision to the entire workforce by ensuring the transparency of the message.
  • Employees are empowered and encouraged to take risks and come up with ideas and embrace a new vision.
  • The senior management formulates the short term goals and link the same with the vision, determines the opportunities to improve. This need to be reviewed periodically.
  • Continuous improvement is the key by having improvements in hiring, employee development and promotion.
  • To have the long term effect of the change, the new ways of thinking should be developed across organizational culture and business processes.
