Imagine you are a family scholar and you have received a grant through the National Council on Family Relations to study the effects of dual-income/earning parent households on the academic achievement of children (in those households). How would you go about studying this topic?

Explain, in some detail, which method(s) of research you would use and why. What obstacles do you expect to encounter? Which methods would be most appropriate? Discuss your research design or plan.

First of all, I will select few families for initial studies. After making selection, I will follow their daily routine. This will include the timings of their waking up in morning. timing of their breakfast, their timing of going to their workplaces and so on.

I will also prepare a questionnaire based on following questions-

1. What are your time allotment to your work?

2. How much time do you spend at your home?

3. How much time do you spend with your kids?

4. What remains the topics of discussions during your stay at home?

5. Do you talk to your family members on daily basis?

6. What is the importance of education in your life?

7. Which is more important; money or education?

8. Is there any correlation between money and education?

9. Are you satisfied with your work?

10. How much time do yo devote for sleeping?

11. Do you create bed time stories for your children?

12. Do you teach your child about the value of money?

13. Which channels your kid prefer to watch on television?

14. Do your child has reading habit on regular basis?

15. Do you remain busy on your weekend?

16. Do you devote time for family holidays?

I will analyse answers of these questions. Relevance of answers will be evaluated on the basis of future perspectives of children. Academic performances of child will also be evaluated for getting a clear idea. Data of several families will be collected in initial phases and their standard deviation will be calculated.

Results will be normalised through various statistical tools. Pool size of centres of data collection will be increased at later stages. True collection of data will be ensured through self monitoring. Previous research work will also be evaluated for getting the knowledge of loop holes and future perspectives.

Relevance of data for society will also be considered after proper analysis and discussions with different groups of society.
