  1. I am interested in the relationship between personality and music preference. Specifically, I am curious as to whether or not people with different music presences vary in the personality trait conscientiousness. Conscientiousness is the personality trait of being careful and vigilant. People high in conscientiousness are thoughtful, structured, organized, and not at all spontaneous. Students in an Intro Psych class indicated their music genre they preferred most (Country, Pop, Rock, or Classical) and completed a single conscientiousness item. The data is presented below. Each score represents each class member’s level of conscientiousness. Higher scores indicate greater conscientiousness.

Group 1: Rock

Group 2: Pop

Group 3: Country

Group 4: Classical

Answer #1

(a)

Source SS    df MS F    p-value
Treatment 44.50 3 14.833 7.08 .0012
Error 56.60 27 2.096
Total 101.10 30

(b) The hypothesis being tested is:

H0: µ1 = µ2 = µ3 = µ4

Ha: At least one means is not equal

The p-value is 0.0012.

Since the p-value (0.0012) is less than the significance level (0.05), we can reject the null hypothesis.

Therefore, we can conclude that there is effects of type of music people listen to on their conscientiousness.
