If your Kali VM is already up and running, login to the root account on the VM via ssh. It does not matter whether you use a command line or GUI sshclient. If your VM is not currently up, use the vSphere web client to start your VM before logging into it via ssh.1: Create an Unprivileged User For some labs, including this one, we will need a non-root user account on the Kali VM. Create an unprivileged user named student with home directory /home/student and shell /bin/bash. Set the password to match your root password.# useradd -d /home/student -m -s /bin/bash student# passwd student Create the group developers, then add the student user to that group and the sudo group. Logout when you are done. # groupadd developers# usermod -G developers,sudo student# exitNow create a new ssh session and login VM as the unprivileged user student. $ ssh student@your_ip_addressIf you cannot login as student, then you have made a mistake in the student account setup in this section and will need to fix that mistake before proceeding with the lab.2: User Access Control Create a temporary directory named t to conduct the exercises in this section.$ mkdir t && cd t2.1: What is your user ID? What is your default group ID? What other groups (GIDs) do you belong to (if any)?$ id 2.2: Create a test file and check the permissions. List the permissions in both octal and rwx notations.$ touch test_file$ stat test_file2.3: What umask is set in your account? You can determine the umask from the default file permission setting and the octal permissions of the test file you created above.In computing, umask is a command that determines the settings of a mask that controls how file permissions are set for newly created files. It also may refer to a function that sets the mask, or it may refer to the mask itself, which is formally known as the file mode creation mask.2.4: Create a file named test2 with octal permissions 0711.
