A speedboat travels on a calm lake at a speed of 25 mi/hr, on a heading of 68° east of north. It leaves the south shore of the lake (whose shoreline is uniformly straight along an east-to-west line) at 10:00 am. How far from the shore will the boat be at 10:10 am?

Answer #1

Distance from shoreline = v*t

= 25 mi/hr *10/60 hr* cos 68 degree

= 4.1667 mi * cos 68 degree

= 1.56 mi answer

A certain river is 0.5 mi wide, and flows due east at 2.7 mi/h relative to the shore. A boat attempts to cross the river straight from one shore to the other. If the boat travels due north at 1.7 mi/h relative to the river, (a) what is the speed of the boat relative to the shore? (b) how far downstream is the boat when it reaches the opposite shore?

*Chapter 2, Practice Problem 2/085 The speedboat B is cruising to the north at 84 mi/hr when it encounters an eastward current of speed vc = 16 mi/hr but does not change its heading (relative to the water). Determine the subsequent velocity of the boat relative to the wind and express your result as a magnitude Vrel and compass direction measured clockwise from north. The current affects the motion of the boat; the southwesterly wind of speed vw = 24...

The New Hampshire State Police use aircraft to enforce highway speed limits. Suppose that one of the airplanes has a speed of 130 mi/h in still air. It is flying straight north so that it is at all times directly above a north–south highway. A ground observer tells the pilot by radio that a 60.0 mi/h wind is blowing but neglects to give the wind direction. The pilot observes that in spite of the wind the plane can travel 130...

3 400 29. Water traveling along a straight portion of a river normally flows fastest in the middle, and the speed slows to almost zero at the banks. Consider a long straight stretch of river flowing north, with parallel banks 40 m apart. If the maxi- mum water speed is 3 m/s, we can use a quadratic function as a basic model for the rate of water flow x units from the west bank: f(x) x(40 – x). (a) A...
