How does electron configuration correlate to the magnetic behavior of ions and atoms in a substance?
The magnetic behavior of an atom or ion depends on its electronic configuration in the following way,i.e. we can predict whether the material is paramagnetic or diamagnetic on the basis of its electronic configuration-
For example, in the case of iron atoms, the electronic configuration is-
Due to the presence of FOUR
unpaired electrons, Iron is highly paramagnetic.
In the case of Copper atom, it has one unpaired electron in 4s
whereas all the electrons are paired in 3d. So the diamagnetic
property is much higher in contribution. Whereas in the case of
,
all the electrons are paired so it will be completely diamagnetic
and in case of
,
only one unpaired electron gives some paramagnetic property to the
ion.
How does electron configuration correlate to the magnetic behavior of ions and atoms in a substance?
1. Using the orbital diagrams, show the electron configuration for the following atoms and ions. Indicate the magnetic behavior of each atom or ion (paramagnetic or diamagnetic). a) C and C+ b) Cu, Cut and Cu2+
A Review Constants Periodic Table Learning Goal: To use electron configuration to explain magnetic behavior. Electron configuration The magnetic behavior of an atom or ion depends on its electron configuration. An important property that results from the electron configuration of an atom or an ion is behavior in the presence of an external magnetic field. Due to the random orientations of electron spins most materials have no permanent magnetic effect without an external magnetic field. Part A Select the correct...
