A three phase distribution substation transformer has a nameplate rating of 7250 kVA and a thermal capability of 120% of nameplate rating. If the connected load on the transformer is 8816 kVA at a power factor of 0.85 lagging, determine the following:
The kilovar rating of the shunt capacitor bank required to decrease the kilovoltampere load on the transformer to its thermal capability level.
The power factor of the corrected load.
The kilovar rating of the capacitor bank to correct the power factor of the load to 0.95 and unity.
Sketch a graph of capacitor requirement (kVar) against power factor and comment on the fact that power factor correction is seldom brought to unity.
