• a) a D residue in the same protein is brought into close proximity
• b) the K side-chain shifts from the outside of the protein to a nonpolar site inside
• c) an R residue in the same protein is brought into close proximity.
In each case, will the pKa go up, down, or remain the same? Explain.

a) pKa / K can be either +/0 in charge. Bringing a “D–” into close proximity favors K+. For K to have a positive charge more of the time, its pKa increases( higher pKa’s are better bases).
