Realizing every workforce is different, identify and discuss the four basic steps involved in launching a union organizing campaign. Does this differ in the public and private sector? Explain.

The four basic steps in launching a union organizing campaign are

  • Discuss the problem that the employees/workers face and if it could be solved through unionization. If so, then discuss the possibility of formation of union with the colleagues.
  • Speak to a union organizer. This could be from an existing union and then discuss the strategy and values that can be obtained by joining the union.
  • Speak to the colleagues in order to gain support for the unionization within the organization. Unionization s only possible if majority of the employees or workers agree.
  • Conduct a formal election or card-check to demonstrate the majority. This will allow the workers to be unionized in the organization.

At this point, we are discussing the process of unionization. When it comes to this process, there is no significant difference between public and private sector. However, the process of collective bargaining may have be different based on the organization type.
