Ans: The racemic mixture ibuprofen forms two diastereomeric salts. The (R,S) salt is soluble in water and the (S,S) salt is insoluble in water and they are separated by simple filtration.

One mole of racemic mixture will give half mol of the pure enantiomer after proper work up. Enantiomers have the same molecular weights, hence their weights will also represent their molar weight (g/mol) for calculation prpose.

We got pure    ibuprofen from the crude ibuprofen.

So, 1.98 g of pure enantiomer will come from

= 2 x 1.98

= 3.96 grams of diastereomeric salts
