Answer to 4. When a fire containing 1-bromobutane takes place, the fumes of a toxic gas HBr (hydrogen bromide) evolves.

Answer to 5. The synthesis of 1-bromobutane is carried out by using 1-butanol and sodium bromide in presence of sulphuric acid.

After reaction completion, as shown in above first equation, there is a few amount of HBr, sodium hydrogensulphate (NaHSO4), H2SO4, NaBr remains present in the reaction vessel along with the desired 1-bromobutane. Out of all these organic layer is washed with 2M NaOH to remove traces of H2SO4, Thus,

H2SO4 + NaOH gives Na2SO4 (sodium sulphate) and water which are soluble in water and thus remaining H2SO4 is removed. After treating with 2 M NaOH, the organic layer is washed with brine (aqueous saturated sodium chloride solution) to remove the traces of desired product in aqueous layer. Due to saturation of water by NaCl, 1-bromobutane gets out of it and gets dissolved in organic layer.

Answer to 6: 1-butanol is treated with Na2SO4 (sodium sulphate) to remove any water molecules from the organic layer.

Answer to 7: During this experiment, a proper solvent (here it may be p-xylene or toluene) is used to extract 1-butanol. To remove this solvent in a final step, distillation is carried out.
