The fair information practices (FIP) is a general term for a set of standards governing the collection and use of personal data and addressing issues of privacy and accuracy .

Different organizations and countries have their own terms for these concerns - the UK terms it "Data Protection", the European Union calls it "Personal Data Privacy," and the OECD has written Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows of Personal Data .
