The functional groups present in Labetalol are hydroxyl (-OH), amide (-CONH2) and amine

(-NH-).

The structure of Labetalol is shown below. One of the -OH groups is attached to the phenyl ring while the other -OH group is alpha to the phenyl ring. The phenyl ring bears the -CONH2 group The -NHR (R = alkyl group) is attached gamma to the phenyl ring.

Since Labetalol contains a free -NH- group, hence, Labetalol can act as a base by easily donating the non-bonding electron pair over the amine nitrogen atom.

Labetalol is injected to the patient’s body via intravenous infusion.
