Last year, the university spent over £20 million for centralised heat pump technology; basically energy production becomes centralised in one location within the university, and the energy will be distributed to other buildings in underground pipes. This reduces the amount energy obtained from regional utilities. Costs of electricity has increased 120% since 2003, and gas increased by 190% since 2001. However, current prices are now (on average) equivalent to those about 4-5 years ago. For two years, the university was under construction with building, road and garden closures being quite frequent. Based on principles of sustainability and resilience, explain whether the university has made an acceptable decision?
Ans :- Sustainability is made up of three pillars: economic, social and environment. These principles are also informally used as profit, people and planet.
Resilience refers to the ability of a system to maintain key functions and processes in the face of stresses or pressures by either resisting or adapting to change.
University has installed heat pump Technology, Which has reduced the amount energy obtained from regional utilities and the Electricity and gas Charges are equivalent to prices 4-5 years ago though prices has been increased more than 100%.
All Three Pillars of Sustainability Economic, Social and environment has been Satisfied, Therefore based on principles of sustainability University has made an acceptable decision. Resilience: For Two years, when the Building is under Construction Closure of Roads and garden is quite frequent. During that Period the key Business Functions are effected, We Can Say that Decision made does not Satisfy Principles of Resilience.
