How can you know if a solid is formed when two aqueous ionic solutions are mixed? What is the name of this kind of reaction? Provide an example.
To know if a solid will be formed on mixing of two ionic aqueous solutions, you need to look at the solubility product of the products formed. If the solubility product is very low and the compound formed is insoluble in water than it will settle on the bottom as a solid. This solid is also called precipitate and hence this type of reaction is called precipitation reaction.
NaCl (aq) + AgNO3 (aq) -----> NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)
AgCl is the precipitate.
