Should governmental regulations, such as the Medicare Conditions of Participation, reside in the public sector (i.e., with the government) or should they be enforced by private organizations in much the same fashion as Joint Commission accreditation?

Join1t Commission Accreditation of Healthcare Organisations (JCAHO) is a non profit organisation based in US. It is commonly referred to the Joint Commission in the healthcare industry and among governmental industry regulators on the federal and state levels. The commission develops performance standards that look after the crucial elements of operation such as patient care, infection control and consumer rights. The major objectives of the Joint Commission Accreditation is to continually improve and enhance the quality of Healthcare delivery.

Under the authority of Section 1865 of the social security act, hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organisations have been automatically deemed to meet all the health and safety requirements for participation. The joint commission is currently governed by a board of 24 commissioners, 7 each appointed by the American Medical Association and American Hospital Association And 3 by the American College of Surgeons and Physicians . 1 by the American Dental Association and 3 by private citizens appointed by the board to add the consumer perspective.
